This is the story of five high school students that have to report for Saturday detention. The five students appear to have nothing in common. They are
the Jock, the Criminal, the Princess, the Nerd and the Basketcase. They are to
stay confined in the library for a period of approximately 8 hours and are to complete a 1000 word essay about who he or she
thinks he or she is. The students pass the time in a variety of ways until
they start to open up to each other with their inner secrets revealing they have a lot more in common than originally thought
possible. The plot starts with a poignant letter by student, Brian Johnson, addressed
to their antagonistic principle questioning the choice of essay theme. The play
ends with Brian’s second version of this letter with more of an insight of the other students. There have been many coming of age stories since, but none have stood the test of time as well as
The Breakfast Club. Teenagers of today still deal with the same
insecurities, frustrations and strained relationships with parents.
